BELLENDEN RAND HUTCHESON concentrates his practice in estate planning, including wills, trusts, tax-advantaged transfer techniques, family succession planning, estate-freeze transactions, charitable giving, and estate planning for same-sex couples. Rand also specializes in estate administration and fiduciary litigation, and serves as trustee and executor upon client request.
Rand represents clients who need basic estate planning; wealthy and very wealthy individuals who need sophisticated, tax-sensitive estate planning; gay and lesbian couples who need estate planning advice; executors in complex estate administration cases; litigants on both sides of will contests and actions for breach of fiduciary duty; and public charities involved in estate-related legal disputes and trust reformation actions.
Prior to going into solo practice, Rand was a partner at the Amherst law firm of Brown, Hart & Kaplan, LLP, and before that, at the Worcester law firm of Erskine & Erskine. Rand began his legal career in the Estate Planning groups at the Boston law firms of Bingham Dana (now Bingham McCutchen) and Rackemann, Sawyer & Brewster.
Rand earned his J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School. He also holds a Ph.D. in medieval English and linguistics (an area in which he has published a number of articles and a book) from Columbia University, and a B.A. cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from New York University. He is a member of the Hampshire County, Massachusetts, and American Bar Associations, and he also serves on the board of the Pioneer Valley Estate Planning Council.
